The Definition of Driven

Driven is one English word that uses six letters to sum up the fuel of dreams. We all know that eventually we have to wake up and make these dreams a reality. My testimony is how this truth has transformed my life and helped me gear up my internal drive.

I grew up in a single parent household in Detroit, Michigan. My mom understood the necessity of a quality education; therefore she strategically placed me in the school system that she thought would foster my drive for learning and cultivate my goal to become a great doctor. Although my drive for success did not increase until I went to college, I still achieved excellent grades throughout primary and secondary education. At this time, my motivation for success was external; I liked the attention I received from family and friends for being a “brainiac.” Only until I was accepted into the post-baccalaureate program at the Wayne State University School of Medicine was I forced to switch gears regarding my personal goals and the cost of success! At this time, I learned the secret of being self-driven.

My first exam result in the program was a big failure! Although the feeling of defeat was strong, I had nowhere to go but up! That’s when I was certain on my career goal of becoming a physician because I allowed this failure to drive me to wake up early and go to sleep late, studying tirelessly for success. I am grateful for this incidence of failure because it propelled me into the driven person that I am today. After graduating from the program, I was accepted into medical school. This acceptance taught me more about what I had on the inside than the acceptance itself. This showed me that I could obtain greatness in life by staying self-driven toward my goals.

From being externally motivated to now knowing the secret to a fulfilling life, I want to encourage you, reader, to be DRIVEN! Literally create a road map to your goals and if you don’t have one, research the road others have taken to achieve the same goals you have. Kick the vehicle of success into drive and don’t stop until you see results!

Lastly, a quote from “Think and Grow Rich.”

“Life battles don’t always go to the stronger or faster man, but soon or late the man who wins is the man who thinks he CAN!”

Food For Thought: The difference between wealth and poverty comes down to having a positive thought life, attitude, grit and physical strength. I’m currently reading the book “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill. In this book he explains “autosuggestion,” which explains the phenomenon of an “idea” turned into a “physical manifestation.” I am a Christian and before I read this book, I first read the instructions of Jesus Christ, which states in Mark 11:23, “For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.” Christians call this faith!
